Plan your visit to Sturgeon Bay
Getting to Sturgeon Bay, where it sits on the peninsula, and how to use it as a base.
The practical bits
- Position
- Southern gateway to the peninsula, where Highways 42 and 57 divide
- Best for
- Maritime history, a year-round base, first or last night
- State park
- Potawatomi, immediately north of the city
- Season
- Open year-round; busiest in summer
Using the city as a base
Sturgeon Bay is the practical choice if you are arriving late, leaving early, or travelling outside the summer season. It has the county's largest concentration of services and the shortest drive to Green Bay.
The trade-off is distance from the northern villages. If your trip is mainly about Fish Creek, Baileys Harbor or Washington Island, stay farther north and treat Sturgeon Bay as a stop on the way.
A half-day plan
-
1
Start at the museum
Get the maritime context first; the canal and lights make more sense afterwards.
-
2
Walk the canal
Drive to the station lot and walk to the seawall for the pierhead light.
-
3
Cross the bridge
Finish downtown, on foot, on whichever side you have not seen.
-
4
Add the park
If daylight allows, drive north to Potawatomi for the Green Bay shoreline.
